Portable appliance testing, also referred to as PAT testing is a test carried out on an electrical appliance to ensure it is continuing to work safely and that there is no risk of injury or danger as a result of usage.

The Electricity at Work Regulations places the legal responsibility of ensuring the provisions of the regulations on employees, employers and persons who are self-employed. In effect this requires all of these people to make sure that a regular program of inspection is put into operation. The Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) places such a requirement where employees and the public are using electrical appliances, where they are being hired or supplied and where they are serviced and repaired.
